Drool!    And I'll second Pukka's recommendation on learning to overcome the flinch factor.  If you're not aware of it, a light charge of powder into the pan will give a faster lock time than filling...

Life is too short to go jumping about with a rifle that isnt going to hurt you! Just concentrate on the target and holdthrough. Very beautiful piece, congrats!

With a twist rate of 1 in 30 you are going to have accuracy problems with round patched balls,a beautiful rifle though,I have never had the money to buy one of this quality

A beautiful rifle to be proud of. Considering its age and condition I assume it has spent most of its life as a show piece. If I owned it I'd be reluctant to haul it to the range, much less take it...

Respected but still used, Richard. (In my book anyway!)I'm pretty sure the barrel has been nicey re-browned at some time, and this in no way detracts from it. Browning wears off and has to be re-done...

Yes I do believe in using vintage about anything, my nick refers to a 1950 Vincent Black Shadow (998cc's) which I owned and rode for 27 years, its stablemates included a Velo Venom Clubman MkII, BMW...

I ran the sums through a program for optimum bullet stability for a round .625 ball trough a 1 in 30 inch twist rate barrel and it came out at 191fps.I suspect this was a experiment that did not work...

It's not as if I don't use vintage items and in many regards my house and 3000 sqft garage resemble a museum of antique furniture, tools, cars and firearms. However I've already done more than my fair...

Herbert, You will find many Germanic rifles (So-called Jaeger rifles) with a similar rate of twist. they will shoot well. Even the Hawken brothers rifling machine was only 1in 48" so I am told. Again,...

1/30 was the accepted twist for target rifles of Baker bore and they shoot very well indeed. I have a Prussian flint rifle in .573 with a 1/20 twist which shoots a patched ball over 33 grains of fast...

A friend of mine built a Alexander Henry-style m/l .66 caliber RB stalking rifle for elk hunting. The barrel maker suggested a 1:120" twist, so that's what he went with. He could never get it to shoot...

Yes, 1: 120 is a bit slow. 1: 72" I'd say about right for heavy charges. (In .66" cal) The advantage of slower twist, is they are not finicky re. powder charge. Mine would shoot (A .54) well with a...
